L4GG's Statement on the Conviction of Derek Chauvin
Derek Chauvin has been found guilty on all counts of murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd. We commend the state of Minnesota for holding Chauvin accountable.
But as lawyers, we must stand for something more than holding murderers accountable after the fact.
We must demand justice, which will require deep systemic change.
George Floyd should be with us today.
So should Duante Wright, and Adam Toledo, and so many others who have lost their lives to police brutality and racial bias.
Narrowly focused “police reform” isn’t enough. Guilty verdicts aren’t enough.
We must work together to end systemic racism and to uphold civil rights.
Today’s verdict offers a glimmer of hope for the future. It’s up to us to turn that hope into reality.
