In Celebration of Pro Bono Week, Lawyers for Good Government Honors Nelson Mullins with 2024 Outstanding Pro Bono Partner Award

Washington D.C. – In recognition of this year’s National Celebration of Pro Bono (October 20-26, 2024), Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG), a leading nonprofit organization that mobilizes pro bono legal support for human rights programs, is pleased to announce Nelson Mullins as a recipient of its 2024 Outstanding Pro Bono Partner Award. The award acknowledges Nelson Mullins' extensive contributions to L4GG's mission, with significant involvement across a diverse range of issue areas, including racial justice, climate change, healthcare access, and immigrant rights.

Nelson Mullins has been instrumental in supporting L4GG’s Climate Change and Environmental Justice (CCEJ) Program, specifically through its Decarbonization and Climate Resilience Funding Clinic. This initiative helps disadvantaged communities access federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act for vital decarbonization and climate resilience projects.

“Through the clinic, Nelson Mullins has helped overburdened communities receive tailored pro bono legal services, ensuring they can access much-needed federal funding for climate, water, and infrastructure projects,” said Jillian Blanchard, L4GG’s Director of Climate Change and Environmental Justice. “They have been an integral partner in advancing our goal to support 15-20 communities a year through these efforts.”

Through L4GG’s Clinic, Nelson Mullins provided pro bono legal support to grassroots organizations, including assisting the Florida Food Policy Council with its Storm Squad Campaign, which addresses food insecurity and disaster preparedness in BIPOC communities. Nelson Mullins also played a key role in supporting a project in Gary, Indiana, where they provided capital funding advice for a solar energy microgrid project, helping the community implement sustainable energy solutions.

Nelson Mullins' impact extends beyond environmental justice. During the pandemic, they collaborated with L4GG’s COVID-19 Small Business Remote Legal Clinic to establish legal clinics in four states, offering crucial assistance to struggling small businesses impacted by the crisis. Their team has also played a vital role in L4GG’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Pro Bono Project, helping vulnerable individuals from Ukraine secure legal status to remain and work in the United States without fear of deportation.

Nelson Mullins has also made significant contributions to L4GG’s Reproductive Health Legal Assistance Project (RHLAP), which tracks daily updates to state-specific healthcare laws. Their efforts have helped doctors, patients, and advocates navigate the complex and rapidly changing legal landscape concerning reproductive health access.
