Work Authorization Applications for Asylum Seekers [5-10 hours per matter]

In the past few months, hundreds of L4GG’s asylum seeking clients have been admitted to the US to wait for their immigration proceedings within the safety of our borders. Without proper work authorization, these asylum seekers will not be able to provide for themselves or their families as they wait for resolution in their immigration case.

We’re seeking pro bono assistance to help hundreds of asylum seekers fill out and file a Form I-765, an Application for Employment Authorization, and all supporting documents, to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If granted, the asylum seeker will receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), or work permit, which will authorize a non-citizen to work in the United States for a limited period of time.

This work will require participating attorneys to file a G-28 but representation would be limited solely to the employment authorization application.

We estimate that each application will take approximately 5-10 hours total to complete in coordination with the asylum seeker applicant. L4GG will provide training and be available for mentorship or to answer questions. L4GG cannot provide translation services, so we ask that firms/companies help their attorneys access these services, if necessary. The majority of asylum seekers will be Spanish-speaking. L4GG also has malpractice insurance for those who need coverage.

Timing: L4GG is planning to launch this project and start giving assignments on a rolling basis to firms/legal departments between August and November 2021. We would ask that each attorney file their G-28 and complete the application with their asylum seeker within 4 weeks of receiving the assignment.

To express interest in this project, please fill out the form on this page and select “Work Authorization Applications for Asylum Seekers” in the Projects field.
