Yesterday, the U.S. Senate passed President Trump's reconciliation bill by a vote of 51-50, advancing one of the most destructive pieces of legislation in recent history. Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) condemns this dangerous bill that prioritizes tax cuts for billionaires while stripping healthcare, food assistance, environmental protections, and basic rights from millions of Americans, including lawfully present immigrants. We call on the House of Representatives to reject this assault on working families, farmers, states, local governments, vulnerable communities, immigrant families, and our planet's future.
Today's Supreme Court decision in Trump v. CASA, Inc. represents a dangerous departure from our founding principles and poses an existential threat to the rule of law itself. By restricting federal courts' ability to issue universal injunctions against unconstitutional government actions, the Court has created what Justice Jackson aptly called a "zone of lawlessness" where the Executive can violate constitutional rights with impunity.
Washington, D.C. —Today, a coalition of nonprofits, Tribes and local governments sued the Trump administration for unlawfully terminating the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Environmental and Climate Justice (ECJ) Grant programs despite a Congressional directive to fund them.
The plaintiffs come from every region of the country and will be seeking class action certification and preliminary relief so that all 350 grant recipients who have been harmed by the wholesale termination of the EPA program may continue their initiatives. These community-based initiatives include improving climate disaster preparedness, expanding workforce development opportunities, improving and monitoring air quality, mitigating stormwater and flood damage, combating high energy costs, and improving community members’ ability to participate in decision-making and permitting processes that impact their health and environment.
Earthjustice, Southern Environmental Law Center, Public Rights Project, and Lawyers for Good Government filed the challenge on behalf of ECJ grant recipients to seek the nationwide restoration of the program and to require the administration to reinstate awarded grant agreements.
The Nation of Laws Coalition stands in strong support of the American Bar Association (ABA) for filing a lawsuit challenging the federal government's attempts at systematic intimidation of lawyers and law firms.
Whether it’s helping hospitals deliver life-saving care in the face of restrictive abortion laws, ensuring communities can access the clean energy funding they’re owed, or expanding legal pathways for asylum seekers - L4GG is stepping in where justice is most urgently needed. Moreover on May 1, more than 10,000 lawyers and advocates rallied in over 50 cities to defend the rule of law—an effort L4GG helped build from the ground up. And with the launch of our Impact Docket, our community is turning action into outcomes every two weeks.
The Trump administration is preparing a new rule that would block asylum seekers from obtaining work permits while their cases are pending. If enacted, this change would eliminate one of the only remaining lifelines in the U.S. asylum system. For over 30 years, asylum seekers have been able to apply for work permits after a certain waiting period. This proposal would undo that—turning survival into a privilege, and waiting into a punishment.

The U.S. House of Representatives is preparing to vote on a bill that would do real, lasting harm to millions of people across this country.
We’re talking about a massive giveaway to billionaires—paid for by gutting essential services, expanding funding for ICE, and destroying key environmental protections.
Here’s how to take action!
In these unprecedented times, we're pleased to share a significant development this Earth Day that demonstrates how legal advocacy can create immediate positive impacts for communities across the nation.
Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG), a nationwide nonprofit organization mobilizing lawyers in support of equal justice and civil and human rights, condemns in the strongest possible terms the Trump administration's refusal to comply with the Supreme Court's order to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the United States after his wrongful deportation to El Salvador.
Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) joined more than two dozen civil rights organizations in filing amicus briefs urging the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to block the Trump administration’s executive orders threatening law firms and legal organizations for challenging the administration’s policies.
Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) today announced a significant expansion of its Federal Fund Protection Clinic with the launch of a new 1:1 pro bono legal assistance program. This enhancement builds upon the Clinic's ongoing efforts to safeguard federal climate and environmental justice funding that has been at risk due to executive actions, administrative delays, termination notices, and compliance challenges. The Fund Protection Clinic, which has been providing legal analysis, guidance, and resources to more than 300 federal grantees since its inception in January, will now offer direct, personalized legal consultations with qualified pro bono attorneys beginning March 21, 2025.
Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) applauds the recent decision by U.S. District Judge Adam Abelson, who on February 21 issued a preliminary injunction blocking key provisions of President Trump's executive orders seeking to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in the federal government and among federal contractors.
Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ryan Hathaway as the new Director of Environment and Climate Justice. Ryan joins L4GG following an extensive career in federal service, most recently serving in the Biden administration as the Director for Environmental Justice and White House Interagency Council on Environmental Justice in the Executive Office of the President.
In the past month, L4GG’s work has been featured in multiple major media outlets—highlighting the fight to defend the rule of law, protect climate policy, and hold our government accountable. These stories make one thing clear: our legal community has never been more vital.
As the Trump Administration attempts to bypass Congress, defy court orders, and dismantle climate and environmental protections, L4GG is mobilizing lawyers to push back against executive overreach and defend our democracy.
Over the past two years, we have worked with grantees to ensure they remain in compliance with federal, state, and local funding regulations. Now, we are witnessing firsthand the devastating impact of ongoing federal funding freezes on nonprofits, Tribal organizations, and under-resourced communities. Despite clear legal obligations—and in some cases, direct court orders—federal agencies continue to delay payments, block access to grant portals, and ignore grantees’ urgent requests for information. These funding disruptions are causing real, irreparable harm: organizations are shutting down programs, laying off workers, and struggling to continue essential services.
In an extraordinary response to escalating threats against the U.S. Constitution, more than 2,100 legal professionals from all 50 states have signed L4GG’s open letter condemning recent executive actions by the Trump administration and reaffirming their commitment to defending the rule of law.
The recent wave of executive orders and actions has created unprecedented constitutional challenges for our nation, posing a direct threat to the very foundations of our democracy. Here is how Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) is strategically responding through four of our key initiatives.
Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG), a nationwide nonprofit organization supported by a network of more than 125,000 lawyers and advocates in all 50 states, strongly opposes the nomination of Pamela Jo Bondi to serve as Attorney General of the United States. Our opposition stems from three critical concerns: 1) her demonstrated pattern of subordinating constitutional duties to Donald Trump's personal interests; 2) her troubling record of undermining civil rights; and 3) her active participation in efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG), born in the wake of the 2016 election and representing a network of over 125,000 attorneys nationwide, strongly opposes the nomination of Russell Vought to Direct the Office of Management and Budget. Our opposition is based on three critical concerns: 1) his documented pattern of violating the Constitution and the law; 2) his planned harm to communities; and 3) his clear intention to transfer congressional power to the executive branch.
Estuardo Cifuentes, Project Corazón Manager, speaks on the devastating impact of the reimplementation of the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). As a survivor of the program, Cifuentes sheds light on how MPP exposes migrants to violence, denies due process, and violates fundamental human rights, calling for urgent action to end this inhumane policy.
Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG), born in the wake of the 2016 election and representing a network of over 125,000 attorneys nationwide, strongly condemns President Trump's recently announced executive orders that threaten constitutional rights, environmental protections, and equal rights under the law and calls on attorneys across the country to join them in defending those rights.
