Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) was born in the wake of the 2016 election, uniting a network of lawyers and advocates determined to uphold the Rule of Law, protect the rights and dignity of vulnerable communities, and strengthen our democracy. Today, given that the United States will soon usher in a new Administration that has threatened mass deportations, attacks on basic civil and human rights, and eradication of environmental protections, we find ourselves called to action once again. L4GG has been here before, and we are prepared to continue our fight for justice with the support of tens of thousands of attorneys across the country.
Traci Feit Love, Founder and Executive Director of Lawyers for Good Government, said, “As lawyers, we remain resolute in our commitment to preserve democracy, protect civil and human rights, and uphold the Rule of Law. We stand with the communities whose rights are under attack and we will use our skills to resist oppression in all forms. Lawyers have an obligation to ensure the integrity of our legal system and we will not retreat from that obligation. Justice will not be defeated, and neither will we.”
Estuardo Cifuentes, Project Manager for L4GG’s Project Corazon and an asylee, emphasized L4GG’s commitment to protecting immigrant communities under the Trump administration’s return. “We will fight Trump’s racist deportation agenda every step of the way and will mobilize thousands of attorneys across the country to respond to the President-elect’s policies and mitigate harm. Our immigrant neighbors, families, and communities deserve to live in safety and with dignity, and we will make sure their human rights are upheld. As a direct victim of Trump’s immigration policies during his previous administration, this is a fight for the soul of a country that has historically welcomed us for many years, and we will not back down.”
Khadijah Silver, Supervising Attorney for Civil Rights at L4GG, reaffirmed the organization’s unwavering support for marginalized communities. “Since the beginning, our organization has centered those most harmed by divisive, discriminatory policies. We will stand up for those targeted because of their race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, immigration status, socioeconomic background, reproductive choices, disability, geography or health status. We are steadfastly committed to defending civil rights and individual freedoms such as bodily autonomy and privacy, and will ensure our partners and allies in government have the legal information they need to combat policies that erode the progress we have fought so hard to achieve. We are powerful, together, and we will not back down.”
Jillian Blanchard, Director of Climate Change and Environmental Justice at L4GG, addressed the organization’s commitment to climate change and environmental justice despite the President-elect’s history on climate issues. “When Trump announced withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord in 2017, thousands of cities, states, and businesses were undeterred, doubling down on their commitment to advancing climate progress. We’re ready to help communities do that again and can do even more by leveraging the historic federal funding that the Biden-Harris Administration has already distributed under the Inflation Reduction Act. We have been working with half of the country’s governors offices to ensure that both climate change and environmental justice remain at the forefront of state and local policy, and will continue to ensure that local leaders have the tools, resources, and public support they need to reduce emissions, invest in clean energy projects, and bring good-paying jobs to their communities. L4GG will be there to support them every step of the way as we continue our fight for climate equity.”
As we face an unprecedented and challenging future, L4GG remains resolute. We are ready to protect vulnerable communities, our democracy, and the environment, even when victory feels distant.
