The recent wave of executive orders and actions has created unprecedented constitutional challenges for our nation, posing a direct threat to the very foundations of our democracy. Here is how Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) is strategically responding through four of our key initiatives:
Safeguarding Federal Funding: We're spearheading a coordinated legal response to protect congressionally appropriated federal funding. Working alongside coalition partners like Environmental Protection Network, Natural Resources Defense Council, and Democracy 2025, we've provided detailed guidance to hundreds of federal grantees facing funding freezes. Our work has directly informed multiple lawsuits on the funding freeze, creating a vital bridge between individual organizational support and national impact litigation.
Organizing Lawyers: We're organizing the collective voice of the legal community in a number of ways. For example, our recent open letter from America’s lawyers on executive branch overreach, coupled with formal opposition to concerning nominations like Pam Bondi for Attorney General and Russell Vought for OMB Director, has garnered thousands of actions from the legal community. We're maintaining a continuously updated reference page at L4GG.org/Action for ongoing advocacy and volunteer opportunities.
We also recently selected our newest cohort of 25 lawyers and law students to participate in our 2025 L4GG Leadership Program, mobilizing lawyers and law students in state advocacy and change-making across a number of critical issue areas.Defending Immigrants from Deportation: Based on extensive field research at the Southern border and collaboration with immigration coalitions, we've identified a critical unmet need: providing legal support for asylum applications to defend against mass deportations. Our Project Corazon and Pro Bono teams are developing a structured remote clinic to address this specific gap in legal services.
Protecting Transgender Rights: We are working with coalition organizations and pro bono partners to scope the development of a comprehensive transgender rights resource hub, modeled after our successful Policy Resource Hub for Reproductive Rights. This urgent initiative responds to escalating attacks through executive orders and state-level actions, providing critical tracking and analysis of legal developments nationwide to support proactive policy development and reform efforts.
