A NOTE FROM OUR FOUNDER

As we move into the fall of 2024, the stakes for our collective future could not be higher. The upcoming elections will have profound implications for the values we hold dear—justice, equity, and the rule of law. At L4GG, we’re stepping up to ensure that voters are informed, that marginalized communities have access to the legal resources they need, and that our work continues to bridge critical gaps across the country.

With the election approaching, we’re proud to introduce L4GG Action Fund’s Good Government Voter Guides, which offer a non-partisan look at where Senate and Gubernatorial candidates stand on crucial issues like voting rights, civil rights, and climate change. These guides are a key resource to help voters make informed decisions, and we invite you to share them with others in your network this fall.

In the fight for reproductive rights, we’ve launched our Hospital Model Policies Project in Georgia, providing clear legal guidance to healthcare providers navigating restrictive abortion laws. This project empowers doctors to deliver life-saving care while staying within the bounds of the law. Meanwhile, our LGBTQ+ Asylum Clinic in NYC has exceeded expectations, providing critical legal assistance to over 240 asylum seekers, and we’re now looking to expand this model to rural areas. Additionally, our Clean Energy Tax Navigator has been a lifeline for 60 cities, helping communities access tax credits for public clean energy projects, and we’re partnering with Giraffe Financial to reduce the price of filing for even more communities.

Our progress is only possible because of your unwavering support. Together, we are making a tangible impact, and as we continue this journey, we hope you’ll stand with us to protect the values of good governance, human rights, and justice for all.

2024 Good Government Voter Guides Now Available!

With the 2024 elections fast approaching, L4GG Action Fund is excited to announce the release of our first-ever Good Government Voter Guides, now available on our website! These non-partisan guides provide a clear overview of where the candidates for the 34 Senate and 11 Gubernatorial races stand on six issue areas critical to Good Government, including voting rights, climate change, civil rights, reproductive rights, and more. Each guide is designed to equip voters with the information they need to make informed decisions at the polls.

On each guide’s webpage, we’ve made it so that you can easily share this important resource with your networks. We believe that informed voters are the foundation of good government, and that lawyers and advocates in our community are the perfect messengers for what voters should be thinking about when heading to the polls.

We hope you’ll join us in spreading the word about our voter guides and getting them into the hands of as many people as possible. Be part of this vital effort to protect the principles of good government in the upcoming election!

Protecting Patients in a Post-Dobbs World: Hospital Model Policies Project

Since the fall of Roe, restrictive abortion bans have left providers without clear legal guidance, contributing to a rise in maternal deaths and depriving patients of the care they are entitled to. In states like Georgia, where the state’s 6-week abortion ban was recently restored, doctors are increasingly navigating a legal minefield. At L4GG, we are addressing this crisis head-on with our Reproductive Rights and Health Equity Program.

We are developing a pilot project in Georgia to create state-specific hospital protocols that offer clear, legally sound guidance to reproductive care providers. These protocols will empower doctors to deliver life-saving care while remaining within the law, helping hospitals maximize care even in restrictive environments. With support from healthcare professionals and hospital administrators, we aim to expand this project to other states facing similar legal challenges.

We need your help to implement this project – and take it nationwide. With your support, we can continue developing these critical model policies, ensuring that providers move forward with confidence andthat patients receive the care they need.

NYC LGBTQ+ Asylum Clinic Exceeds Expectations!

Earlier this year, L4GG launched its pilot LGBTQ+ Asylum Clinic in NYC to provide essential legal support to asylum seekers who previously had little to no access to legal resources. With the help of our pro bono attorneys and volunteers, the clinic has far exceeded its initial goal of serving 25 individuals per session. So far, we’ve helped 240 LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in just six sessions and are on track to assist over 400 by the end—far exceeding our original goal of 250 across 10 sessions.

This clinic has provided life-changing legal assistance, including help with asylum applications, securing work permits, and connecting participants to vital social services like workforce development programs. For many asylum seekers, this is their first time receiving the specialized legal guidance needed to navigate the complex U.S. asylum system and secure a more stable future.

Looking ahead, we hope to expand this clinic model to underserved rural and remote areas across the country. Additionally, we aim to educate other organizations on how to run similar clinics, enabling us to reach even more LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in need of legal support.

To achieve these goals, we need your support so we can bring these critical legal services to those who need them most.

Bridging the Gap for Under-Resourced Communities:
Clean Energy Tax Navigator

This summer, L4GG launched the Clean Energy Tax Navigator, a groundbreaking tool designed to help tax-exempt entities like local governments, tribal groups, and nonprofits access tax credits available under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The Navigator provides step-by-step guidance to determine eligibility, maximize benefits, and file for tax credits. The Navigator has been a lifeline for many under-resourced communities, and since its July launch, it’s been used 15,294 times, with 1,899 entities using it to determine whether their project is eligible for IRA funding.

Additionally, L4GG is currently assisting 60 cities with Direct Pay through an existing partnership called the Lighthouse Cohort, and we are in the process of assisting an additional 135 entities who have requested help, all aiming to benefit from these powerful new incentives. Moreover, L4GG assisted six communities to apply for $120M in federal funding under the Community Change Grant to support critical community projects like an Eco-Village in Ohio and a Climate Resilience Project in St. Petersburg Florida, which has become more critical now than ever.

In our commitment to equity, we have also partnered with Giraffe Financial to simplify the e-filing process for clean energy tax credits. For entities working with L4GG or using the Navigator to complete their tax forms, Giraffe is offering a special reduced price until November 2024 of $350 per project, making the filing process affordable and accessible for those who often lack the resources to navigate complex tax regulations. This partnership ensures that underserved communities can fully leverage the IRA’s tax incentives and secure much-needed funding.
