Lawyers for Racial Justice
Getting Involved as an In-House Legal Department
Lawyers for Racial Justice (LRJ) is an initiative by Lawyers for Good Government Foundation (L4GG) to mobilize critical pro bono legal resources in the fight for racial justice. In particular, LRJ is working on two fronts: (1) creating systemic change by identifying and helping to dismantle policies contributing to racial inequality; and (2) developing remote pro bono legal clinics in selected issue areas to advise those dealing with the harmful effects of discriminatory policies.
The Lawyers for Racial Justice initiative provides opportunities for in-house attorneys to get involved in the fight for racial justice. The vast majority of our projects are researching/writing, drafting model legislation, and participating in remote legal clinics.
FAQs:
Can we work with one or more of our law firms?
Yes. L4GG has experience working with more than 100 law firms across the country and we welcome teams of in-house and law firm attorneys on our projects.
Does the work lend itself to teams?
Yes. The majority of LRJ pro bono opportunities are time-limited and “bite-sized.” These are perfect opportunities for teams of attorneys to work together. L4GG cannot provide access to online legal research tools at this time, so depending on your company’s in-house resources, partnering with a law firm might be an ideal approach.
Can legal departments take on leadership roles in the initiative?
Definitely. We welcome companies that share our commitment to racial justice. There are a variety of ways for legal departments to participate, including providing direction on the design and focus of pro bono projects, and receiving priority opportunities to participate in pro bono projects as they are created.
