L4GG Celebrates Emily Gordillo as Volunteer of the Month

At Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG), we are privileged to highlight volunteers who are strong in their dedication to advancing justice. This month, we recognize Emily Gordillo for her exceptional work in immigrants’ rights. Emily’s involvement with L4GG’s Project Corazon is a testament to the profound impact that compassion can have on the lives of others. With a background in both the arts and legal work, Emily brings a unique perspective to our work. Her story inspires us all to use our talents to help those in need.

Joining L4GG and Project Corazon

Emily’s most significant contribution has been her work on our LGBTQ+ Legal Clinic for asylum seekers in New York City. She collaborated closely with Estuardo, Project Corazon’s program manager, to translate, edit, and streamline the legal clinic manual originally written in Spanish. Their teamwork ensured that it was legally accurate accessible and clear for non-native English speakers navigating a complex asylum process.

Reflecting on their collaboration, Estuardo shared,

“Working with Emily was an incredible experience. Her attention to detail and commitment to making the manual clear and user-friendly made all the difference. Together, we created a resource that empowers asylum seekers and equips them with the knowledge they need to navigate the legal system.”

In addition to her work on the manual, Emily has also assisted with drafting and translating personal statements for asylum petitions. This role has been both humbling and rewarding for her. Reading the stories of individuals who have endured unimaginable hardships to seek a better life has reinforced her commitment to justice and equity.

Personal Reflections

Emily’s work with L4GG has not only enriched the lives of those she has helped but has also contributed to her personal growth. Her involvement has motivated her to improve her Spanish language skills, which she now practices at home with her children, and has provided her with a new avenue to apply her legal expertise for meaningful change.

“If people can work that hard to better their lives, they deserve a fair chance. It’s been incredibly fulfilling to use my skills to help others, even in small ways,” Emily shared.

Words of Advice for Other Volunteers

When asked what advice she would give to others considering volunteering with L4GG, Emily emphasized the importance of taking the first step.

“Even if you think you don’t have the right experience, just reach out. If you care and want to help, there’s a place for you here,” she said.
