In Celebration of Pro Bono Week, Lawyers for Good Government Honors Wilson Sonsini with 2024 Outstanding Pro Bono Partner Award

Washington D.C. – In recognition of this year’s National Celebration of Pro Bono (October 20-26, 2024), Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG), a leading nonprofit organization that mobilizes pro bono legal support for human rights programs, is pleased to announce Wilson Sonsini as a recipient of its 2024 Outstanding Pro Bono Partner Award. The award honors Wilson Sonsini’s exceptional contributions to L4GG’s mission, particularly through its work within the Climate Change and Environmental Justice (CCEJ) program, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) cases, and Lawyers for Racial Justice program.

“Wilson Sonsini has been an exceptional collaborator and a true champion in our mission to mobilize pro bono legal support for equal justice,” said Lauren Worsek, L4GG’s Director of Pro Bono Initiatives. “Their partnership has been instrumental in advancing our Climate Change and Environmental Justice program, especially through their leadership in generating crucial resources on clean energy tax credits for underserved communities. Wilson Sonsini’s dedication to equity and sustainability is unparalleled.”

Wilson Sonsini’s commitment to L4GG’s CCEJ program has been vital in helping states, local governments, and nonprofits access funding for clean energy projects under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Their expertise on a groundbreaking new clean energy tax credit, known as Direct Pay, has helped entities like nonprofits and municipalities—traditionally ineligible for tax credits—benefit from federal clean energy tax initiatives.

Direct Pay is a game-changing tool that allows under-resourced communities to take ownership of clean energy projects. Wilson Sonsini’s guidance has helped unlock millions of dollars in funding for these communities. Their dedication has already resulted in one of the largest states in the country filing for over 200 clean energy projects.

In addition to their environmental justice efforts, Wilson Sonsini has also contributed to L4GG’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) redesignation cases, offering pro bono legal services to individuals fleeing conflicts in countries such as Ukraine and Afghanistan. Their work has helped vulnerable individuals stay in the U.S. without fear of deportation and secure permission to work. They have also contributed state-level research on policies disproportionately impacting communities of color through L4GG’s Lawyers for Racial Justice program.

As the legal community celebrates Pro Bono Week, Lawyers for Good Government is honored to recognize Wilson Sonsini with the 2024 Outstanding Pro Bono Partner Award. Their contributions have been instrumental in creating a more just and equitable future, advancing both climate justice and human rights.
